Uses of Cubic Boron Nitrate (cBN) for Industrial Purposes

Cubic boron nitrate, or cBN, is the second-hardest substance known to mankind. Known principally as a substitute for diamonds in industrial machines, it is a main component for the cutting of certain metals. It is cheaper to work with compared to genuine diamonds, while still providing and powering the same industrial applications.

The use of cubic boron nitrate as an abrasive is principally due to the substance’s insolubility with certain metals. Iron, nickel and other similar alloys at high temperatures are known to react with diamonds, creating carbide chemicals. These can ruin the cutting procedures, as they transform the chemical makeup of the materials that need to be cut. They can thus contaminate critical processes where exposure to carbon or oxygen can be disastrous to the project being carried out.

Cubic boron nitrate, on the other hand, is inert when interacting with these metals at high temperatures. In that way, the risk of wasteful contamination and unwanted reactions is next to none. Coupled with the extreme hardness that cBN possesses, tools built with these as part of cutting are highly effective for a diverse set of tasks. Machines for metal cutting thus use cubic boron nitrate as part of their tool materials to be able to cut metal.

It is the low cost of cubic boron nitrate’s manufacturing process that makes it valuable. By taking boron nitrate powder and performing a chemical process called sintering, cBN can be created very quickly in massive amounts. Machines that make use of these not only have a comparable strength to diamond tools, but come at lower costs as well.

Continental Diamond Tool USA is a leader in heavy-duty tools. They manufacture top-of-the-line metal cutters, using diamonds and cBN cutting and drill bits for maximum effectiveness.
