    How to Choose the Right Ribbon Blenders ?

    Ribbon Blenders are mixing machineries used to mix  hundreds of  products, from medicines, fertilizers, resins to flavored cosmetics and coffees. Tthey are one of the most common and popular mixing devices in service today. These machines are ideal to be used in the pharmaceutical industry for fine blending of medicinal particles. To choose the right ribbon blender, many factors need to be taken into consideration.  To boost blending productivity, the key factors for choosing the right blender are as follows:
    * Drive design: The first factors to consider in powering the ribbon blender are always product density, moisture content and volume. Specifying the right drive needs effective communication between the equipment manufacturer and buyer to identify key process needs.
    * Slow-speed starting: Many ribbon blenders were manufactured without any provision for starting at slow speed. But a dead load start leads to many disadvantages, all of which increase costs. The buyer has two options now : either to choose an over-sized motor that is capable of delivering the peak horsepower needed to get the blender moving or a smaller motor that is right for powering the blender once it is running. The first choice is not a good one and it is wasteful, since the larger motor needs more power and its initial cost price is high. The second choice is risky, since the high torque at start-up over-stresses the machine and eventually causes maintenance problems. The best solution is to opt for a slow-speed start that protects the blender. The buyers have many options for this like hydraulic operated, electronic starting systems, and variable frequency drive to start the blender at slow speeds.
    * Variable speed blending: The ability to blend at varying speeds is very advantageous. It is required in any R&D application. It is  useful in any plant where many products are blended and changeover is common on the process line. By adjusting the speed of the ribbon, you can set the blender to reach the greatest possible efficiency for each product.
    * Direct drive vs. belt drive: Today a direct drive is usually the most efficient choice. Direct drive is extremely reliable and compact. But in some cases, a belt drive offers significant advantages. For example, in a large blender, the belt drive may actually be less costly than a direct drive and the belt drive also provides the ability to change speeds later on.
    * Ribbon design and interior finish: The ribbon design represents a critical element in blender design. The ribbon, support rods and shaft must be correctly matched to the physical properties of the product to boost blending efficiency and prevent mechanical failures.
    * Seals and valves: Recent developments in seals, shaft design, packing systems have made ribbon blenders more versatile and reliable. Improved seal integrity always helps to insure against contamination.
    Conclusion: After choosing the desired features you should contact the manufacturer and run a test on your ribbon blender. Nothing gives you better satisfaction than of knowing that you have chosen the best possible design for your requirements.
